DEI Award
The DE&I Committee presented the first ever DE&I Award in 2021. Recipients can be an individual, group, municipality, or organization who has promoted or demonstrated excellence and leadership in most or all of the following areas:
- Encouraging representation from historically underrepresented individuals to pursue careers in Missouri’s water industry,
- Supporting and advocating for historically underrepresented individuals in the water workforce, and
- Promoting engagement amongst historically underrepresented individuals to improve industry retention.
The nomination form can be found below, and is due to the MWEA DEI Committee Chair(s) by January 31, 2025.

Emerging Leader of the Year
The Emerging Leader of the Year Award highlights an emerging member of MWEA who has demonstrated contributions to enhancing the activities of the Missouri Water Environment Association and contributes to improvements in the fundamental knowledge of performance in water collection and treatment systems, water resources production, and research on issues important to the water environment.
Emerging Leaders Scholarship
Scholarships from MWEA are intended to recognize and enhance students’ interest in wastewater/water treatment and the environment. The committee is looking for well-rounded students who are involved in extracurricular activities, demonstrate leadership, celebrate diversity in all its forms, and have a good scholastic record. Foremost, the selection committee is looking for students who will pursue a career leading to membership in WEF and MWEA. To be eligible you must be attending a Missouri-based college or technical school and be enrolled in an Associates, Undergraduate or Graduate degree program or technical program related to the environment, wastewater, or water resources.
WEF Awards
Arthur Sidney Bedell Award: Chosen by Nominating Committee
The Bedell Award acknowledges extraordinary personal service to the Member Association of the Federation. Each Federation Member Association is privileged to name one of its members to receive this award, which may be based on organizational leadership, administrative service, membership activity, stimulation of technical functions or similar participation. The frequency of nomination for the Association is determined by the number of members in the Association. An appropriate certificate or plaque shall be presented to the awardee at the Association Annual Meeting following Federation Board of Control approval.
William D. Hatfield: Chosen by Nominating Committee
The Hatfield Award recognizes outstanding wastewater treatment plant operation in Member Associations of the Federation. Each Federation Member Association is privileged to name one of its members to receive this award. The frequency of nomination for the Association is determined by the number of members in the Association. An appropriate certificate or plaque shall be presented to the awardee at the Association Annual Meeting following Federation Board of Control approval.

Recognizes individuals for outstanding performance, professionalism and contributions to the water quality analysis profession. The award is presented by a WEF representative at the WEF Member Association annual meeting.
Burke Facility Safety Award: Chosen from applications by Safety Committee | View Application |
The Burke Award encourages an active and effective safety program in municipal and industrial wastewater facilities, and to stimulate the collecting and reporting of injury data. Each Member Association of the Federation is privileged to name one of its wastewater facilities to receive this award, which is based on the review of the facility’s safety program and safety record for the preceding calendar year. The frequency of nomination for the Association is determined by the number of members in the Association. A certificate is presented to the awardee at the Association Annual Meeting following Federation approval.
